Many people will have seen Ho Chi Minh City’s crazy traffic in videos. Riding in it is truly an experience as we start the tour.
A few short cuts get us out of the city quickly to a mid morning coffee stop and the start of quieter, flowing country roads. Lunch beside Tri An Lake is a welcome stop before continuing on to a network of small concrete paths weaving their way through the stunning, rich farmland bordering Cat Tien National Park.
Our stop for the night in Cat Tien Village is a world away from Saigon’s busy streets. A mostly Ethnic community catering to Agriculture and growing numbers of tourists to HCM’s closest jungle national park, a hammock by the river and a cosy wood cabin is waiting for you!
If we are lucky, a sunrise wake-up call and chance to see wild Gibbons is a magical experience. For the energetic, an early morning cruise on the river is an option or coffee on your private balcony looking over the river.
Today is all about a great day of riding! A relatively new road, overlooked by most travelers, takes us away from the main highway to Dalat. A great section of twisties quickly climbs to the start of the Central Highlands Plateau where we follow the ridgelines through a mix of high altitude jungle, farmland, coffee plantations and finally gum and pine forests as we approach Dalat. Much of the ride has panoramic views into the surrounding valleys and the variety of changing scenery often surprises people just a day from the biggest city in the county.
The locally grown coffee is as rich as the red soil it’s grown in and there’s always time to stop for a wake up shot, as well as photos and depending on the weather, a dip in an ice cold jungle stream! Dalat is famous for its scenery, year round Spring like weather and is one of the most popular destinations for Vietnamese travelers and newlyweds. The cool alpine weather with its European climate is a big attraction for many people. Explore the night market, sample some unique foods, go for a walk around the lake or relax in one of the many beautiful cafes in the area.
A quick descent out of Dalat takes us through the surrounding coffee plantations with panoramic views of the area. Within a couple of hours these are left behind as we head over the Chu Yan Sen Mountain range. The other side, we branch off into some of the relatively isolated valleys. Home to the local K’Ho People, you will feel miles away from the modern world!
The small concrete paths take us cross country to join back up with the main road in time for a sunset stop. Great views over some of the floating villages greet us before we get to our night stop on the banks of Lak Lake.
A shorter riding day, but plenty to see! For those with enough energy, sunrise is a special time on the lake. Fishermen in wooden canoes paddling gently past as buffalo come out to graze and if you’re lucky, you might see some of the local Elephants swimming across the lake! From here a cross-country ride through rice fields and small Ethnic villages takes us to a late lunch stop and refreshing swim at the impressive Dray Nur Waterfall. Once refreshed, a short ride sees us in the capital of the province, Buon ma Thuot. A fast growing and modern town made wealthy by the surrounding coffee plantations, the city is a contrast to our previous night.
Today sees a change of scenery from the forests and coffee plantations to areas ravished by the effects of ‘Agent Orange’. A hot, dry landscape is testament to the long term effects of war in the area. This gives way to wide expanses of tea plantations closer to Pleiku with it’s rich volcanic soil. Pleiku and Kon Tum where important locations both during French occupation and the more recent war. The ethnic groups were found to be an efficient fighting force, knowing the land and conditions intimately. Named ‘Montagnards’ or ‘Mountain people’ by the French, until a few years ago, you could find some of the older locals speaking French and architecture in the area still shows colonial influence.
A leisurely day exploring the area around Kon Tum. Visiting some of the ethnic Ba Nar Villages and an introduction to the culture and rich history of the area.
If the weather is hot, which it is mostly is, a swim in the clear water of the Dak Bla river is welcomed! Most evenings a spectacular sunset can be watched from Kon Tum’s famous ‘Lover’s Bridge’ before ending the day with a bbq feast at one of the local restaurants.
Another day that will guarantee to put a smile on the riders' faces as we head into the mountains. Flat agricultural land gives way to deep river valleys and areas of thick jungle as we head north. The small provincial town of Kham Duc is the base for various mining ventures in the remote mountains and has a Wild West feel about it. Remote and somewhat isolated by it’s position, our night stop has great views of the sunrise over the mountains. Only a short ride from Da Nang and the busy tourist areas, it feels like another world out here.
Continuing along the Laos border and into even more remote mountains, it’s another day for the riders. Probably one of the best roads in central Vietnam and often overlooked in favor of the coast, this section of the Ho Chi Minh Trail is guaranteed to put a smile on anyone’s face! The border town of A’Luoi is our night stop. Depending on the day we arrive, we can have the opportunity to visit the famous ‘Hamburger Hill’. Until recently the area was off-limits due to unexploded mines and bombs. Tourists are now allowed to visit this historically significant site including some sections of the tunnels. For those wanting to fully immerse in the local atmosphere, an early morning coffee and breakfast at the local market is a colorful and lively experience!
The road follows the steep river valleys along the Laos Border and is no less spectacular than the previous couple of days. Semi-nomadic ethnic groups can be seen fishing with home-made spear guns in crystal clear rivers, taking you back to a time when life was simpler. Crossing the Thach Han River, we head up to the hilltop town of Khe Sanh. Many people will know the name and the view of the surrounding mountains is recognisable from a number of movies made about the area. Khe Sanh Combat base was the site of bloody and prolonged fighting to control the area's supply lines to the south. Eventually allied forces were pushed back but the remnants of the base can still be seen today.
Our last day in the mountains takes us on a stunning ride north to the towering limestone outcrops of the Phong Nha Khe Bang National Park. Designated a World Heritage Area, this used to be one of the poorer regions of Vietnam. The discovery of Hang Son Doong, the world’s biggest cave as well as a number of other systems claiming various world records, has brought big changes to the area in the last decade!
A day to relax and explore the area. Turquoise blue rivers emerge from deep underground and dark cave entrances beckon the adventurous. Unfortunately Son Doong requires booking well in advance and has very limited numbers of visitors every year. Exploring the beautiful area around Phong Nha, soak up the amazing scenery, visit the site of the movie King Kong and visit Paradise Cave, large enough to park several passenger planes, and Phong Nha Cave, accessible by boat!
Riding at a leisurely pace from the limestone mountains of Phong Nha, we head to the coast and the fishing village of Vinh Moc.
Situated on the border between north and south Vietnam during the war, the village was subject to heavy bombing. The villagers dug more than 30 kms of tunnels over three levels, in less than a year. Although less well known and shorter than the famous Cu Chi Tunnels, they are no less impressive.
A ride down the coast to our night stop is a change from the mountains of the last week. Cua Tung beach is popular with local tourists and can either be packed with visitors or extremely quiet, depending on the time of year. Either way, fresh sea air, a swim in the ocean and great seafood are tonight’s highlights.
A sunrise swim, walk on the beach to watch the fisherman, or coffee with the locals? Today is a relaxing ride continuing down the coast to Vietnam's old Capital city of Hue.
Renowned for being a center of culture and history, retaining a lot of artistic traditions and unique cuisines, Hue is also the site of the Emperor’s Palace. We try to arrive early enough to explore the city, walk along the banks of the ‘Perfume River’ and soak up the atmosphere or relax before dinner.
A visit to Hue wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Old Citadel. Home to Vietnam’s Emperor’s and an impressive structure covering nearly 500 acres, the Citadel is a reminder of the country’s ancient history that is often overlooked by more recent events. After a lunch stop in Lang Co, an attractive small town with over 30 kms of white sand beach and lagoon, we ride the fanous Hai Van Pass. Some 32 kms of switchback bends with panoramic views over the coast, it has become one of the most talked about sections of road by visitors in recent years. The descent is equally attractive with views to Da Nang and sandy bays leading to the city.
A short ride the other side of Da Nang ends our ride in Hoi An. One of the most visited towns in Vietnam, Hoi An has retained a lot of it’s old architecture, in stark contrast to the surrounding modern cities. Whether you relax on An Bang Beach or go exploring the streets of the old town, an evening bbq and end of tour dinner by the pool is a great way to finish what we hope will have been the ride of a lifetime for you!
You will see extremely decent landscapes, waterways, ranch land, paddy field, run of the mill houses and way of life of the general population while in transit to Chitwan. The whole distance you will slip down along the twisting street along the bank of the Trishuli River.
Subsequent to registering with the lodging and getting invigorated you will be informed about full nature programs by our naturalist control. At that point we head on for exercises. There will be a guided town walk and a stroll on the bank of the Rapti River to watch the enchanting nightfall seen in the sub-tropical wilderness. At the night, supper with social programs by ethnic innate individuals with their stick move and inborn drums.Medium-term at Chitwan.
Stay overnight in Chitwan.
